Certificate > Certificate Objectives

Sessions is the perfect place to kick start your game development career.

The Game Art Certificate program builds technical and artistic skills, analytical and communications skills, and an expertise in traditional and digital design. The game industry needs qualified artists, and we aim to supply them.

Students learn both technical and artistic skills, applying professional approaches to digital imaging, 3D modeling, model texturing, game animation, color, and lighting.

Classes are structured around practical projects that mirror current practices in game development. The projects are demanding, and Faculty members critique your assignments to help you create your best work. If you've got the creativity and commitment, we can help you succeed.

"The best 3D art looks for new creative directions and styles instead of trying to get as close as possible to someone's definition of realistic."
Cristin McKee
Sessions Author / Instructor

A secondary focus of the program is building the analytical and communication skills that game industry employers seek. To succeed in game development, you must understand how video games work, and be able to express your ideas clearly (in writing and discussion).

Theory courses with essay and critique components will challenge your critical thinking skills, giving you insights into the video game production process, the tools of the trade, and where the industry is headed.

You'll even be required to play video games and analyze them for art style and gameplay.

"To become a game designer, you'll need some bright ideas, a love for games, and the know-how to put together your own games."
Nathaniel Stein
Sessions Author / Instructor

The program is structured to take advantage of an array of complementary electives in the art and design.

The game industry needs qualified artists, period. And you will become a better game artist if you are skilled in digital imaging, freehand drawing, photography, and the digital arts.

Even if your ultimate goal is to be 100% focused on games, most industry pros agree that your 3D artwork will benefit from getting a broader arts education.

"Game artists should also be versed in non-digital mediums—being able to sketch out what a designer is describing during a meeting is invaluable."
Alex Jimenez
Sessions Author / Instructor
